Create an abstract music poster, promoting an upcoming concert in Montreal of the Canadian jazz band BadBadNotGood. The poster is based on the album "Mid Spiral".
The initial stage of the design thinking was to clearly understand the album and the feel of the music. After multiple listenings, it was clear that Mid Spiral has an experimental and chaotic nature, that incorporates a wide variety of genres. After creating large amount of sketches, there was a noticeable reoccurring pattern — messy lines, going across different directions. This pattern served as a base for further design development.
The Mid Spiral’s experimental and chaotic nature is expressed through flowing spirals, reflecting the flowing and dynamic rhythm of the album. The thin weight of Helvetica balances off the thickness of the spirals. The dark colour palette combined with yellow and blue accents, aims to reflect the jazz roots of the band and the atmosphere of a late-night performance.
